Last week, three people were put in the hospital after a car crash in Mira Mesa. The San Diego Police Department says that alcohol was a factor in the collision.
Police say that a 73-year-old man was driving his Toyota with his 64-year-old wife when they were struck by a Ford driven by a 33-year-old male driver. The Ford was heading north when he collided with the couple.
The older man suffered a fractured hip and ribs. His wife was treated for internal injuries.
The driver of the Ford suffered facial lacerations. It is believed that he was under the influence of alcohol.
Unfortunately, this is a danger that San Diego residents face every day. Edward “Skip” Babbitt knows just how dangerous impaired drivers can be. He also knows that this is one of many dangers Californians face on the roadways.

California sees plenty of car accidents a year. Out of the thousands of people who are injured, there were 3,387 fatalities and over 12,000 serious injuries for the latest reporting year. Closer to home, San Diego County saw 20,385 car accident injuries (minor and major) and fatalities for the same year.
We know that the priority after an injury is to get medical treatment. Unfortunately, we know how expensive medical treatment can be, especially if there are serious injuries involved. We often see major internal organ damage, spinal cord and brain trauma, as well as musculoskeletal injures happen as a result of car accidents. All of these require emergency medical procedures and sometimes long-term rehabilitation.
Will your insurance cover all of these expenses?
What about lost income if you cannot work?
How This Happens
As the story above highlights, impaired drivers are a major problem. In fact, alcohol-impaired drivers are responsible for over 25 percent of our traffic-related fatalities.
We know that many places have passed laws regarding the use of cell phones while driving, but that has not stopped many people from sending text messages or watching videos while cruising down the road. Distracted driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving.
Californians continue to cite speeding and aggressive drivers as major roadway safety problems. Careless and negligent behavior behind the wheel can have devastating consequences.
