Dirt Race Track Causes Severe Burns

April 27, 2019 | EDWARD J. BABBITT APC | Burn Injury

Extreme sports have found their way into the hearts of millions of Americans. Watching experienced and talented athletes do tricks on skateboards, snowboards, bicycles, or dirt bikes gets your heart racing. People who are at the top of their game train hard to awe audiences. They push themselves and their opponents to do better tricks and get high scores. In order to do extreme sports, you need a well-cured terrain. You need the help of a lot of staff and workmen to get a terrain fit for extreme sports. These athletes have to trust that whoever builds the track is doing so with care and accuracy.

Extreme sports athletes are used to getting hurt. It’s like a byproduct of their job. They attempt and complete tricks that can put them in serious danger but giving them burns was a new first. Our San Diego Burn Injury Attorneys at Law Offices of Edward J Babbitt, APC have worked with clients who suffered burns without understanding where they came from. When people think of burn injuries they typically think of fire or extreme heat. People rarely think of chemicals, but sometimes those can be the worst. Chemical burns are dangerous because you have to find a way to get the chemical off your skin without also rubbing it in. Dirt Bike riders at San Diego SX Dirt know all too well about this.

Too Much Lime In The Soil

The race started on Saturday and ended on Sunday afternoon. Each dirt bike rider did what they can to beat each other as well as show off for the crowd. Each athlete was muddy and dirty after each round. A heavy rainfall happened prior to the start of the games which made the track muddier than usual. Thankfully no one on the track hurt themselves but shortly after the race all riders started to experience burning sensations.

Shortly after the race, many turned to social media to detail the burns that were forming on their skin. From inner thighs to arms to eyeballs, these riders experiencing chemical burns from the lime used in the soil to dry it out. It wasn’t just their body that was damaged, but their bikes too. Thousands of dollars of bike equipment corroded. Thankfully, one rider went to the eye doctor just in time. The eye doctor said the PH level of the riders eye was twice the normal amount. It could have caused major eye damage had he not sought the attention of the doctor.

Chemical burns should be treated by a doctor. Some chemical burns may cause severe irritation, the formation of blisters, coughing, shortness of breath, pain, and numbness, or vomiting. The social media posts were respectful to the crew who laid the field, but something needs to be done about the amount of damage to persons and property.
