Mother Faces Prison Time After DUI Crash

November 20, 2019 | EDWARD J. BABBITT APC | Car Accident Attorney

It seems like not a day goes by when alcohol-impaired driving does not cause a tragic accident or death. Alcohol-impaired driving remains a leading killer on the roadways, despite awareness of the dangers. Today, the San Diego car accident attorneys with Edward “Skip” Babbitt want to discuss a recent case that highlights the dangers that drinking and driving bring to the roadways and how it can tear families apart. If you need help after being injured in a DUI accident, we are ready to investigate your case to secure the compensation you deserve.

What happened in this tragic case?

Last November, Mayra Trancoso Gonzalez, 29, crashed her Chevy Suburban into oncoming traffic on Camino Del Norte in Rancho Bernardo. She struck a Jeep head-on according to police.

Inside Gonzalez’s vehicle were her three daughters: a 9-month-old, an 8-year-old, and a 2-year-old. The 9-month old was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was in the arms of the 8-year-old. The force of the incident threw the infant into the windshield, leaving her with a skull fracture. The 8-year-old suffered a broken done, and the 2-year-old suffered injuries to her face.

The driver of the Jeep also sustained serious injuries in the crash. He underwent five surgeries and was unable to work for six months.

Gonzalez was arrested after police said she had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system. The woman’s license was already suspended from a prior DUI crash in which she was on probation for.

The little baby who suffered the skull fracture, now a year older, is still on a feeding tube.

Gonzalez was charged with three counts of felony child abuse, two of which alleged great bodily injured occurred, and felony DUI. She pleaded guilty to the charges in August and has now been handed a sentence of 14 years in prison.

In California, drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of traffic deaths. The California Office of Traffic Safety states that 31% of all fatal car accidents were caused by an impaired driver during the latest reporting year. These incidents regularly lead to severe injuries, like the ones described in the story above.
