Car accidents are not uncommon in and around the San Diego area. Even though we know they happen, we still never expect to be in one. Edward J. Babbitt understands these cases and his knowledgeable and experienced team is ready to help if you of a loved one are injured due to the negligent actions of another driver. Today, our San Diego auto accident lawyers want to discuss a recent crash that injured a pedestrian and saw one vehicle flip over.
This crash shows the unpredictability of our roadways
At around 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, a crash at the intersection of Garnet Avenue and Mission Bay Drive brought traffic to a standstill. Police say that a man driving a silver BMW sedan northbound in the 4600 block of Mission Bay Driver drifted into the southbound lanes and hit a 64-year-old man standing in the center divide. The BMW then continued through the intersection and struck a white Ford Fusion sedan before flipping and landing on its roof.
One man, Gabe Orellana, said he saw the whole thing. “I heard a loud bam and then saw the car airborne. It crashed through the fence.”
The pedestrian in this accident sustained life-threatening head injuries, a broken pelvis, and internal injuries. The 31-year old driver of the Fusion complained of pain, and the 40-year-old driver of the BMW was not seriously injured.
As of this writing, the cause of the crash is under investigation. It is not clear whether anyone was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
Pedestrian incidents are often devastating
Pedestrians have no way to protect themselves from the force of a vehicle slamming into them. It is not uncommon for us to see pedestrian crashes result in serious injuries for the victims, including:
- Traumatic brain injuries/head injuries
- Spinal cord injuries/paralysis
- Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Severe lacerations or amputations
The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) says that there were 811 California pedestrian fatalities in 2017. More than 15,000 pedestrians were injured in crashes throughout the state that year. In most cases, the people struck were in places where they had the right-of-way.
