San Diego Planning Commissioner Discusses Her Devastating Crash

January 15, 2020 | EDWARD J. BABBITT APC | Pedestrian Accident Attorney

Nobody should ever have to worry about being harmed by a hit-and-run driver when they are out walking around or bicycling in San Diego. Unfortunately, pedestrian and bicycle accidents are relatively common throughout the city. Now, a San Diego Planning Commissioner is releasing the video of a hit-and-run crash that almost took her life. You can count on Edward “Skip” Babbitt, an experienced San Diego pedestrian accident attorney to help if you or a loved one are injured in a traffic incident.

San Diego needs an increase in pedestrian and bicycle safety funding

San Diego Planning Commissioner Vicki Granowitz never expected that she would become an example of just how unsafe the streets of the city are. However, that all changed when she was seriously injured in December of 2018 after being struck by a hit-and-run driver as she crossed an intersection.

Granowitz Has released the graphic video of the hit-and-run incident that almost took her life.

“I’m sharing my story to raise awareness for what can result from a moment of distracted driving,” Granowitz said at a recent press conference. “My hope is that my experience can raise awareness about safe driving to prevent traffic injuries and death.”

The incident left Granowitz with a fractured knee, a severe concussion, multiple contusions, and several front teeth knocked out. She underwent multiple surgeries and had to use a wheelchair for weeks after the incident. She says she will be in pain for the rest of her life due to the crash.

The suspect, in this case, a 75-year-old San Diego resident, was eventually tracked down. They pled guilty and were sentenced to three years of probation and a suspended license.

Safety advocates have worked for years to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety in San Diego. In 2015, the City Council voted to institute the national “Vision Zero” initiative, with the goal of ending all traffic-related fatalities in the city by 2025. Unfortunately, serious injuries and deaths due to traffic accidents have only increased.

The city did install two stop signs at the location where Granowitz was struck, and the mayor has released plans to upgrade nearly 300 intersections around the city. These upgrades are supposed to include pedestrian countdown timers and high-visibility crosswalks.
