Speeding Led to Fatal Ramona Crash, Authorities Say

May 17, 2019 | EDWARD J. BABBITT APC | Car Accident Attorney

Despite the constant barrage of news stories about accidents that result from speeding, people continue to do so, putting not only their lives at risk, but also the lives of other people on the roadway. Police say that’s what happened last week when a motorcyclist in Ramona was driving his 2001 Yamaha R-1 recklessly and speeding near San Diego Country Estates. The rider lost control of his motorcycle, colliding with a 2018 Lincoln SUV, resulting in his death. The man, who was unidentified, died on the scene.

Witnesses at the scene told California Highway Patrol that the rider was “doing wheelies and veering dangerously around slower-moving eastbound vehicle just prior to the crash.” The rider was wearing a helmet. The investigation into this tragic accident is still ongoing.

If you have been involved in an accident where speed was a factor, reach out to our San Diego auto accident attorney now to discuss the merits of your case. You can hold the speeding driver responsible for your damages, including medical bills, property damage, lost wages, and more.

Statistics Don’t Lie

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warns that speeding remains a top killer on our nation’s roadways. For more than 20 years, the NHTSA says that speeding has been a factor in around one-third of all motor vehicle deaths each and every year. In 2017 alone, speeding was one of the chief causes of at least 26 percent of all fatal traffic incidents. There were 9,717 traffic deaths that year that were tied to speeding.

Speeding isn’t just illegal. Its consequences—as seen in the motorcycle accident detailed above—can be far worse than a ticket or fine. Speeding sets the stage for:

  • Bigger chance for loss of control of a vehicle
  • Diminished effectiveness of any protection equipment for vehicle occupants
  • Increased stopping distance requirement
  • More severe crashes and catastrophic injuries

Less ominously, speeding can result in lowered fuel efficiency, making it cost more to get from point A to point B.

The NHTSA notes that exceeding the speed limit isn’t the only way that speed factors into accidents. Speed can also cause a decline in safety when you drive the speed limit but the limit is too fast for current road conditions. This can happen during bouts of bad weather, when there is roadwork going on, or at night in areas that lack sufficient lighting.
