Our streets should be safe for pedestrians. Unfortunately, we regularly have to contend with pedestrian crashes in this area. Careless and negligent drivers are a constant cause of concern. Edward “Skip” Babbitt knows that pedestrian crashes can bring tremendous expenses to victims and their families and is ready to help those injured. Today, our Chula Vista pedestrian accident attorneys want to discuss a recent crash that has some calling for safety improvements.
What happened in this tragic crash?
We have learned that a man who was crossing the 600 blocks of Telegraph Canyon on Aug. 26 was struck by a vehicle. A camera pointed towards the roadshows the man hurrying across the street. As he crosses the medial into westbound traffic, the video shows his being struck by a sedan. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police say that he “illegally crossed” the Chula Vista road, as there were no crosswalks. However, a man who works on that road calls it “Telegram Speedway.” He says he tenses up any time he tries to merge into traffic on Telegram Canyon.
“We’ve seen more accidents and more accidents all the time,” he said. “And I hope the authorities do something to slow them down.” He says that more speed signage could help slow drivers.
Pedestrian crashes lead to serious injuries
While this case was not technically the driver’s fault, all too often we find that pedestrian crashes are caused by negligent or careless drivers. In many cases, these incidents are caused by drivers who:
Are operating too fast for conditions
Are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Are distracted by their phones or other devices
Fail to yield the right-of-way
According to the state’s Office of Traffic Safety, we see that the pedestrian accident problem is statewide. During the latest reporting year in California, there was 811 total pedestrian fatalities and more than 15,000 pedestrian injuries.
It is not uncommon for our Chula Vista pedestrian accident attorneys to see cases where a pedestrian suffers life-changing injuries as a result of these crashes. This can leave victims with tremendous medical bills and lost income if they cannot work.
