This Is a Tragic Case

We have learned that a motorcyclist was killed on Pacific Coast Highway after a crash on June 7. The California Highway Patrol says that Jason Alexander Wentt, 44, was exiting northbound Interstate 5 onto PCH when he was struck by a Toyota sedan that was traveling the wrong direction.

Police say that the driver of the Toyota was lost at the time of the crash and had made an illegal U-turn onto the on-ramp. Wentt was pronounced dead at the scene and there were no other injuries. Police are still investigating this incident and have not determined whether charges will be filed against the driver of the Toyota.

What Happens in Motorcycle Crashes?

Anyone who owns or rides a motorcycle knows that they can be dangerous. Motorcyclists are vulnerable when they are riding. Even when a rider or passenger is wearing a helmet, there is little protection from the force of a passenger vehicle slamming into them. It is not uncommon for us to see the following as a result of these incidents:

  • Spinal cord trauma (possible paralysis)

  • Head injuries/traumatic brain injuries

  • Internal organ damage or internal bleeding

  • Broken or dislocated bones

  • Severe lacerations or road rash

Each of these injuries requires a cyclist to seek immediate medical treatment. Often, a motorcycle crash victim needs extensive rehabilitation to make a full recovery, if they are not disabled permanently. Victims may no longer be able to work and earn an income to support themselves and their families.

In the case above, a wrong-way driver was responsible for the cyclist’s death. We know that negligent drivers are a risk to motorcyclists. This includes drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs and those who are distracted by their phones or other devices.
